Abstract

The achievement of exclusive breastfeeding in 2020 is also lower than the target set in the 2020 North Sumatra Provincial Health Service Strategic Plan, namely 56.0%. There are 3 districts/cities with the highest exclusive breastfeeding coverage, namely Pakpak Bharat Regency at 68.50%, North Tapanuli Regency at 66.88%, and Sibolga City at 65.15%. Meanwhile, the 3 districts/cities with the lowest exclusive breastfeeding coverage are North Nias Regency at 1.38%, West Nias Regency at 3.24%, and Tanjung Balai City at 9.72%. Meanwhile, for Deli Serdang Regency, exclusive breastfeeding coverage in 2020 is still below the target, namely 32.62%, still below the Provincial Strategic Plan target of 56%, and the national target of 80%. The low achievement of exclusive breastfeeding raises questions considering the large benefits obtained if all babies receive exclusive breastfeeding. The National Nutrition Program (NNP) in its research found that if breastfeeding or breastfeeding practices are not correct, it can cause or even become the main cause of malnutrition in infants and toddlers. So the government needs to make a policy regarding exclusive breastfeeding.
