Peningkatan Kemampuan Berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris bagi Perawat Menggunakan Metode Roleplay

Abstract

Medan as one of the largest cities in Indonesia has several international standard hospitals. One of the demands for the competence of nurses who work in international hospitals is being able to communicate using English. In addition, the city of Medan also experienced the impact of the Asean Economic Community (AEC), where Indonesian nurses are free to work abroad and foreign nurses are also free to work in Indonesia, for that reason Indonesian nurses required to be able to communicate using English so that they can compete with all nurses from other countries. Based on the above reason, it is necessary to carry out community service with the theme of English for nurses who work in hospitals in the city of Medan to improve their English proficiency. It was used a role-play method with English material taught about English for Specific Purpose. The result of this activity was that participants experienced nurses, participants in community service activities experienced an increase in nursing English vocabulary by 85% and increased confidence in speaking using English by 80%. It is hoped that activities like this can often be carried out in order to consistently develop the English speaking skills of these nurses so that the human resources of nurses in Ota Medan will be better in their English language competence.
